YCT Test (Youth Chinese Test)

--1. What is YCT?

YCT (中小学生汉语考试 zhōng xiǎo xué shēng hànyǔ kǎoshì) , was launched by Hanban in an effort to encourage foreign young students under the age of 15 all over the world to learn Chinese and improve their Chinese language proficiency. As part of this effort, since 2004 Hanban has organized experts from different disciplines such as Chinese language teaching, linguistics, psychology and educational measurement to work on the program, conducting surveys in order to understand the latest trends in overseas Chinese language teaching and learning.

--2. Why Take YCT?

The new YCT aims to improve Chinese language learners’ self-confidence and follows the principle of “test-teaching correlation”. It bases the design of the test on current trends in international Chinese language training and is closely related to textbook learning procedures. The purpose of the test is to “promote training through testing” and “promote learning through testing”

--3. What is the Content of YCT?

The new YCT consists of a writing test and a speaking test, which are independent of each other. The writing test is divided into four levels, namely, the YCT (level I), YCT (level II), YCT (level III), and YCT (level IV). The speaking test is divided into the YCT (Beginner Level) and YCT (Intermediate Level).

It consists of two independent parts: written test and oral test. The oral test includes YCT (Beginner Level) and YCT (Intermediate Level). The written test is made up of four different levels, which need to be passed separately:


YCT Level 1 To understand and use the most commonly used Chinese words and phrases.


 YCT Level 2 To understand and use simple Chinese words and phrases / to conduct simple conversation.


 YCT Level 3 With good basic knowledge of the Chinese situation, to conduct a simple conversation about daily life


 YCT Level 4 To meet basic communicative tasks in everyday life, for example, on a China trip.

  Class Time

This program can be taken for 4 or for 8 weeks as a part-time program for 6 hours a week or as a full-time program for 20 hours a week. As a full-time program it can be combined with any other class depending on the student’s learning needs.
